Season 5 League Tournament Format Announced!

A year-end tournament unlike any in Bench Mob history

With an unprecedented number of Bench Mob teams this year, we knew we needed to get creative with the tournament so that (unlike last year) we made sure every squad and player had the opportunity to participate.

After consulting with our board of directors and competition committee, we devised a plan for what promises to be the most exciting Bench Mob tournament ever.

Sunday, March 15 at Oregon Middle School. Free admission. All fans welcome.

    The Format

This year we're doing something new and we think it's going to be dope!

The day splits into two phases: a group stage of playground-style games running non-stop on two courts, with the top group teams moving on to compete in the Final Four on the main court.

    Group Stage

All 13 teams are divided into three groups:

    • Group A — 4 teams: Rod Wave Elite and three others

    • Group B — 4 teams: Flight Elite and three others

    • Group C — 5 teams: Shanghai Sharks and four others

The top three teams from the regular season are each assigned to lead a group. The remaining ten teams will be drawn live and at random that morning at the gym so nobody knows their competition until the day begins.

Within each group, every team plays every other team. Games are playground-style to 15 (with referees and our typical free-throw rules) played simultaneously on two courts. Every team plays at least three games in the group stage. Teams in Group C play four.

Group standings are decided by record first. Ties are broken first by head-to-head results, then by total points scored in pool games, then by total points allowed during the regular season. The winner of each group advances to the Final Four. The fourth spot goes to the best second-place finisher across all three groups.

    Shooting Competition and Final Four

When the group stage wraps up, we move to the main floor.

First, we'll hold a team shooting competition where three nominees from each team compete to see which team is the hottest-shooting of them all.

Then, it's time for the final four! Two semifinals. One championship game. We'll play our standard game format, with Elam Endings where applicable, to crown our playoff champion.

    The Draw

One of the best parts of any tournament is finding out who you're playing. We're doing the group draw live, on-site, before breaking into groups for pool play. We'll have results updated live on our tournament big board so everyone knows where they stand.
